Milton Keynes Waste Recovery Park
AmeyCespa has signed a 15 year contract with Milton Keynes Council to design, build and operate a waste treatment facility based on the maximum incoming flow of 120,000 tpa of residual waste.
The Milton Keynes Waste Recovery Park treats residual waste from households in the borough as well as commercial waste from local offices, shops and restaurants. The Council has a no mass burn policy meaning the technologies to treat the waste involve three processes: Mechanical treatment to extract recyclable materials; anaerobic digestion (AD) and in-vessel composting (IVC) to treat any food or organic waste to create renewable energy and a compost-like output for use on brownfield sites; and, an advanced thermal treatment facility which turns any remaining, unrecyclable waste into a gas to be combusted to generate high temperature steam then electricity in a turbine. In total the plant generates 7MW of electricity for export to the Grid.
Stantec performed the following roles for the project: Owner’s Engineer; Multidisciplinary technical specialist; Contract Administrator; Construction Managers; Commissioning Engineers; Cost Management.
Construction of the Recovery Park commenced in 2014 and was operational in 2017.
