Appraising a range of options to determine the future of the Corran Ferry service in the West Highlands

Corran Ferry Options Appraisal and Fixed Link Study

The Highland Council (THC) owns and operates the Corran Ferry service which runs across Loch Linnhe connecting to a large peninsula to the west. The service faces several issues that impact its long-term sustainability, including the age of vessel, infrastructure, and human resources.

We were appointed by THC to undertake an options appraisal which considered both what the service should look like in the future and how it should be provided. It focussed on the type and cost of vessels to be used and the associated marine infrastructure, as well as who should provide the vessels and infrastructure, who should operate the service, and who should have ultimate responsibility for the service. THC subsequently formally engaged the market in exploring their options further.

We were later appointed to undertake a high-level feasibility study of providing a fixed link across the Corran Narrows, including both engineering and financial feasibility. Initial alignments were developed, costed and visualised using 3D graphics, and the incremental cost of a fixed link over the ferry options was considered in the context of the scale of economic benefits associated with a fixed link.

The findings of both studies will inform a final decision for the future of the Corran Narrows crossing.
