A £100 million investment into facilities improvements

University College Birmingham provides vocational courses to over 8,000 students across several sites in Birmingham City Centre, including the Charlotte Street Campus. Phase 2 of the campus has been included as part of £100 million of investment into facilities improvements—the work has the potential to see student numbers increase to over 10,000.

Due to our involvement in other high-profile projects in Birmingham city centre, we were asked to prepare a proposal for an updated planning application for the site. Our work included preparing a transport statement, as well as a review of servicing and access arrangements. We also advised on alterations to on-street parking and traffic regulation orders to enable the construction of a new access from George Street. Our team liaised with Birmingham City Council and the multidisciplinary project team throughout the process to ascertain the impact of a proposed multi-storey car park in terms of trip impact on the local road network. To top it off, we also advised the project team on the likely timescales and requirements for permits and licenses for activity on the highway to inform the construction program.

The new building will be home to state-of-the-art facilities including lecture theatres, teaching spaces, and a high performance strengthening and conditioning suite for sport studies. It will also contain an exhibition space and the university’s employability and careers service.
