The first modernisation of the Arena since its opening in 1991.

Arena Birmingham (previously known as The Barclaycard Arena and the National Indoor Arena) is an indoor entertainment and sporting venue in Birmingham, United Kingdom. The arena, which is owned by parent company, the NEC Group, is situated in central Birmingham. When it was opened in 1991, it was the largest indoor arena in the United Kingdom.

Our technical assessment of transport, flood risk, air quality and noise supported the Arena in achieving full planning permission for its first modernisation since its opening in 1991. The £20 million refurbishment aimed to make the arena more accessible physically and visually and features a new showcase entrance straight from Brindley Place into the arena, maximising the views over the canal and the city.

We worked with the project team to assess the current noise climate through daytime and night-time surveys and to highlight options to mitigate potential impacts. The redeveloped arena was officially opened with a performance by singer Michael Bublé on 2nd December 2014.
