Allander Leisure Centre and Adult Resource Centre

Originally constructed in 1977, the Allander Leisure Centre in Bearsden had been earmarked for redevelopment for many years. When East Dunbartonshire Council wanted to construct a new, high-quality, inclusive sports and leisure facility on the site, they appointed us to help them engage with the community and secure planning permission.

Taking on this complex task, meant that we needed to consider adjacent residential properties as well as the practicality of keeping the existing center open throughout construction. Plans for a rail halt at the adjoining railway line and sufficient car parking also had to be considered. To address these challenges, we fostered a successful working relationship with the council’s planning department along with extensive stakeholder engagement. By working together we achieved a swift planning permission.

The new inclusive leisure center now welcomes everyone in the community. It includes an eight-lane swimming pool, a dedicated teaching pool, and a hydrotherapy pool. Other fitness facilities include sports pitches, a 100-station gym, squash courts, and a spin studio—and people facing learning challenges can enjoy the new adult resource center and sensory garden.
