Victoria Park Lake Improvements
Despite years of lake management efforts, sediment kept building up in the lake resulting in degraded water quality and unsightly lake conditions in the warm summer months. In order to improve the environmental, habitat, recreational, aesthetic and social conditions of the park and lake, our urban designers went to work to come up with a plan to rehabilitate the lake in this landmark park.
Our team of environmental and civil engineers completed several improvements for the lake, including deepening the lake, removing the sediment, adding a sediment forebay at the upstream end to manage the sediment long term. Additional improvements include stabilizing the shoreline and landscaping to enhance the park. In all, the project removed 45,000 tonnes of thick motor like sediment, filling 125 trucks a day for three months. Another key element of the project was the treatment and reuse of the removed sediment which eliminated the need for taking it to a landfill along with the associated costs. Our efforts preserved and enhanced the heritage features of the park and surrounding area and all the improvements were completed in time for the city’s centennial celebrations.
