New Minas RCMP Detachment

The RCMP wanted to combine three aging Government of Canada Buildings into one facility to better serve the New Minas community. Our solution? The design of a new, 2,938 SM detachment that combines a forensic unit, labs, work bays, integrated cold storage, and holding area in a central urban setting. The new building brings together administrative units for RCMP Kings District and operational units for 73 full-time employees.

As the prime consultant, we were responsible for architects, all engineering disciplines, environmental, and geotechnical specialists. We provided full project scope from program review, through concept, to contract documents, tendering, and contract administration services. The commercial exterior appearance, architectural design solution, final site development, and overall solution provides a beneficial addition to the urban landscape.  Additionally, the sustainable solution of a ground source heat pump system created energy reductions of approximately 30%.

Now complete, the forensic unit is directly on site—as a result, the police force no longer needs to ship forensics to the Halifax Headquarters to be processed. By combining several small detachments into one larger facility and the enhanced ability to provide services locally, the community can be at ease knowing they can rely on their local RCMP.
