Caribou Habitat Restoration Model

Facing changes to the natural landscape as a result of logging, oil and gas projects, and mining, caribou have recently found themselves listed by the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia as a species at risk. Recognizing the need to address this issue of habitat loss, our client, Teck Resources LTD. set out to find new and innovative ways to repair the landscape on their former mine site.

Partnered with Teck and the joint British Columbia Institute of Technology and Simon Fraser University’s Master’s Program in Ecological Restoration, we performed ecosystem restoration research and developed landscape predictive models. Our mining team undertook landform restoration design through mine waste rock resloping, and our environmental team explored revegetation options to restore wildlife habitat on the mined landscape. The resulting landscape model results are being used to inform the reshaping of the former mine’s steep waste rock dumps to facilitate caribou movement and restore their use of the mine site.

This is the start of a multi-year research program that is focused on finding innovative ways to enhance functional habitat for caribou—restoring these populations is key to maintaining the health of our landscape and the animals that inhabit it.
