From going on her first archaeological dig with her father when she was 13 to mapping an unexplored ancient Mayan city (La Milpa), Katherine has amazing stories to tell about her long career. A modern-day Indiana Jones, she loves finding answers to mysteries from the unknown past that are buried under our feet. While performing a normal archaeological survey, she uncovered a previously unknown Paleoamerican archaeological site. Dated to 11,500 years before present (BP), the site turned out to be a major archaeological discovery.
Now, Katherine’s a senior archaeologist and mentor to emerging archeologists. A principal investigator, she obtains antiquities permits and oversees their proper implementation following the required guidelines. As a project manager, she also develops cost proposals, signs project contracts, and oversees project logistics and as a co-teaching and resource group coordinator, she collaborates with other coordinators to assign projects and tasks to the junior archaeologists.
Katherine’s love of the past fills her spare moments. Most weekends, she looks for antiques at estate sales and works on the more than 100-year-old historic cottage she and her husband call home. But whenever they can get away, they love going on adventures—some people call them vacations—to places she’s never been before, somewhere in the world, off the beaten path.
