From her bachelor’s degree through her doctorate and beyond, Elena has focused on the effect of various contaminants—such as pesticides and petroleum products—on the molecular biology of aquatic and marine invertebrate species. She also has extensive experience in statistical analyses and bioinformatics applicable to a wide range of projects.
As an environmental scientist with our Site Investigation Remediation and Risk team, Elena often participates in human health and terrestrial ecological risk assessments at contaminated sites in Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta. One of these recent efforts contributed to a risk assessment required for a site due to a planned change to more sensitive land use— the site is currently industrial and planned to be redeveloped as parkland. The assessment process involved multiple stakeholders including the Conservation Authority due to the presence of a Provincially Significant Wetland on a portion of the site.
When she isn’t busy applying her scientific knowledge to assessing contaminated sites, Elena enjoys spending time with friends and family, watching movies, and salsa dancing.
