Stantec and TC Energy receive International Project of the Year at the 2024 Ground Engineering Awards

Firms celebrated for delivering geotechnical assessments on the Coastal GasLink Project without a health and safety incident

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, and TC Energy have received the International Project of the Year at the 2024 Ground Engineering Awards (GE Awards), recognizing geotechnical assessment work for the Coastal GasLink natural gas pipeline in British Columbia. The awards recognize projects that have delivered geotechnical excellence and demonstrate sustainability, health and safety, and value engineering. Stantec and TC Energy were recognized for conducting the work without any health and safety incidents, despite the challenging terrain the project encounters.

“This award is a tribute to the dedication of the entire geotechnical project team to excellence, innovative solutions, agile engineering, and dedication to health and safety, including stewardship of mental health,” says Lucy Philip, senior geotechnical engineer and senior principal at Stantec. “We rose to many project challenges and embraced technology, including 3D modelling and analyses as well as drone-capture techniques, to bring forward implementable, practical solutions to protect workers, infrastructure, and the environment. For the project, we designed 77 rock bolts, 1,300 meters of longitudinal barriers, 18 in-trench barriers, and 7 gully nets/fences, including a global first: an innovative, openable barrier to protect in-trench workers. We are proud of what we achieved and the collaboration on the project.”

The construction geotechnical engineering work on the Coastal GasLink pipeline spanned some of the most rugged alpine terrain in Canada. Coastal GasLink is a 670-kilometre-long (416-mile) pipeline that will transport natural gas from Groundbirch to Kitimat, British Columbia. Stantec supported the general construction contractor with geotechnical engineering services for a 13-kilometre-long (8-mile) span of Section 8 West across the highest passes of the Coast Mountain Range. The unique geotechnical challenges needed groundbreaking construction techniques and innovative designs, setting a new standard for steep slope pipeline construction. Stantec’s Geotechnical team worked closely with TC Energy to successfully implement practicable risk-mitigation measures and provided prompt field-level expertise to solve challenges as they arose.

“It is an honor for Coastal GasLink to be recognized on a global scale. This award is a testament to our ability to navigate multiple mountain ranges and other challenging terrain to connect Canada’s valuable natural resources to tidewater,” says Jesse Bajnok, project vice president at Coastal GasLink. “Without these innovative engineering and construction solutions, success may not have been possible. Most importantly, the team achieved outstanding safety performance despite the immense challenges they faced along the way.”

The GE Awards, co-sponsored by Ground Engineering magazine, celebrates these contributions. The industry’s highest honors, the GE Awards, are presented to projects that showcase incredible geotechnical industry feats and celebrate the achievements of projects, people, and businesses in the ground engineering sector.
