Federal and state grants of $12 million helped fund the $22 million project

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, announces the substantial completion of The C. Reiss Company’s Superior Dock project on Lake Superior, allowing the C. Reiss Company to relocate its shipping operations from Duluth, Minnesota, to Superior, Wisconsin.

The Superior dock site had been unused for 30 years and had to undergo major rehabilitation and site improvements.

Site improvements included a new rail spur, dock wall, maintenance building and office trailer, rail and truck scales, access road, security fencing, paved salt-storage pad, and stormwater management pond.

“We’re thrilled to provide C. Reiss with a completely rehabilitated dock terminal that will serve its western Lake Superior operations,” said Stantec project manager Brian Lennie. “Starting with our initial natural resources assessments, through permitting, and then final construction, our Midwest team exemplified our commitment to rehabilitating this critical infrastructure for C. Reiss.”

To help fund the overall five-year project, Stantec and C. Reiss worked together to secure grant awards from the federal Port Infrastructure Development Program, the state Harbor Assistance Program, and partnerships with the EPA, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The project received more than $12 million in cost share and grant monies for the $22 million project.

“Completion of our new state-of-the-art Superior dock terminal helps us serve clients in this strategic port for years to come,” said Christian Zuidmulder, president of C. Reiss.

C. Reiss is a recognized name in the bulk commodity and logistic businesses in the Great Lakes region. Its shipping terminals handle 2 million tons of bulk materials annually, including limestone, salt, coal, and other carbon products. The company owns eight dock terminals on the Great Lakes.
