Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has been recognized by the Canadian Council of Indigenous Business with a Bronze level certification in the Partnership Accreditation in Indigenous Relations (PAIR) program. The PAIR program is a certification that recognizes organizations that actively engage with Indigenous communities in a meaningful, respectful, and collaborative way.
This accreditation highlights Stantec’s commitment to fostering positive relationships with Indigenous Peoples by adhering to the principles of cultural awareness, mutual respect, and reconciliation. Achieving PAIR accreditation demonstrates a deep understanding of Indigenous rights, history, and perspectives, which includes respecting Indigenous knowledge, values, and priorities. It leads to stronger, more inclusive partnerships on projects that affect Indigenous lands or communities.
“This milestone reflects our ongoing commitment to building genuine, respectful relationships with Indigenous communities. It’s not just about meeting a standard but about fostering trust, understanding, and collaboration for the long term,” said Erin Bradley, Stantec vice president, Indigenous business and relations. “We look forward to continuing our reconciliation journey, always striving for greater inclusion, with the knowledge that there’s always more we can learn and build together.”
For over 23 years, Stantec has collaborated with Indigenous communities across Canada through formal business partnerships, procurement, targeted Indigenous training and employment efforts, and community-based initiatives.
Stantec is a minority partner in 11 majority Indigenous-owned businesses and two project-specific joint ventures throughout Canada. Successful Indigenous partnerships are built on a foundation of mutual respect, common goals, opportunities for employment, and an understanding of the local community. Stantec’s view is that the partnerships should be focused on capacity building to prepare our partners, if desired, to grow from partners in business to independently running their own enterprises.
“We are always looking to build stronger connections with communities and that includes the way we work with Indigenous Peoples,” said Theresa Frankel, Indigenous business and relations specialist at Stantec. “Meaningful engagement with Indigenous Peoples and businesses, and a commitment to the prosperity of their communities, is essential to our reconciliation journey and to redefine what is possible.”
Stantec's leadership remains actively engaged with Indigenous communities through these partnerships, project collaborations, Indigenous Connections Employee Resource Group events, STEM initiatives in classrooms, and various local community events.
