Stantec partners with Removr to deliver innovative carbon capture solutions

Global firm is supporting Nordic-based company in designing direct air capture plants for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere safely, sustainably, and at scale

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, is providing logistics and project delivery consulting to Removr, a Norwegian company developing direct air capture (DAC) plants that can pull carbon dioxide (CO2) directly out of the atmosphere. DAC is becoming an increasingly prominent carbon capture technology and, at scale, can result in net-negative emissions. This makes it a key solution to the energy transition and achieving the world’s ambitious climate objectives.

Removr develops industrial-scale DAC plants for removing CO2 from the atmosphere. The captured CO2 can then be stored safely and permanently underground or used to produce decarbonized concrete, fuels, and other important materials. Removr aims to become a global leader in industrial-scale carbon removal, leveraging innovative, efficient, and sustainable technology as well as strong industry support. The Company is focused on developing its inaugural commercial DAC facilities in Iceland and is looking to grow into a significantly larger footprint in North America and other regions.

Removr deploys a zeolite-based technology that benefits from utilizing repurposed, existing processes from heavy industry. The process offers unique sustainability benefits and enables highly scalable and automated carbon removal without the use of water, fossil fuels, chemicals, critical minerals, or toxic materials. The technology is designed to operate entirely on renewable energy with the potential flexibility to also manage low concentration point source emissions.

Stantec was engaged by Removr to provide global expertise in engineering and sustainability. Stantec’s industry-leading knowledge includes large-scale ventilation, renewable energy, logistics for large-scale projects, site infrastructure, and modularization, as well as preassembly and preconstruction services for complex projects. Stantec will assist Removr in designing megaton-sized DAC facilities to process billions of cubic feet of air and cost-effectively capture millions of tons of carbon.

“Stantec is proud to partner with Removr in its global endeavor to reduce carbon emissions in the atmosphere using direct air capture solutions,” says Paul Stockburger, vice president at Stantec. “Carbon capture will continue to play an integral role in reducing emissions as we transition to cleaner forms of energy. Stantec looks forward to assisting Removr in delivering these projects in North America and beyond.”

In June 2024, Stantec and Removr conducted a series of workshops exploring the different aspects of DAC projects and which elements were on the critical path to industrializing the technology. Topics included lessons learned from similar projects, constructability, site conditions, and safety and risk management, among others. This collaboration is helping to provide greater understanding into DAC facilities and the challenges—and solutions—associated with them.

”Removr is excited and privileged to join forces with Stantec as a key partner for development of our planned DAC network,” says Chi Chow, chief executive officer of Removr. “Stantec’s global expertise in delivering the most sustainable engineering and project execution solutions represents a critical function for Removr’s ability to deliver what we believe will be the most innovative carbon-removal technology at industrial-scale levels that matters in the drive towards net zero. We look forward to the partnership between our companies.”

The Removr-Stantec partnership serves as a great example of collaboration between a global engineering and project delivery firm, and innovative companies developing thoughtful solutions to some of the world’s greatest challenges. Both firms believe these kinds of partnerships are key to breaking barriers in the industry, especially when it comes to the energy transition and climate solutions.
