Stantec to help develop new sewerage systems in Tashkent Province, Uzbekistan

The sanitation systems will serve nearly 1 million people in urban and rural areas of the region

06/10/2024 ISTANBUL, TÜRKIYE TSX,NYSE:STN

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and utility company Tashkent Suv Taminot (TST) have selected Stantec to provide consultancy services for a large sewerage systems project in Uzbekistan. Stantec will support the project--Development of Sewerage Systems in the Tashkent region (Phase 3)--with design review, construction supervision, and construction management services for nine contracts covering sewerage networks, pumping stations, and wastewater treatment plants.

Tashkent Province is in the northeast portion of Uzbekistan. It is known as one of the most developed industrial areas in the Central Asian country. Supported by funding from ADB, this project will develop centralized urban wastewater systems in the cities of Akhangaran, Almalyk, Angren, Bekabod, Chirchik, and Yangiyul. It will also build decentralized wastewater systems in 70 rural settlements.

When finished, 800,000 people in urban areas will have access to centralized sewerage systems, while 136,000 people in rural areas will be able to access decentralized sanitation systems. The project includes the rehabilitation and construction of 238 kilometres of sewerage networks and 114 kilometres of sewerage collectors. It will also include construction of one new wastewater treatment plant and the rehabilitation and upgrade of four plants.

Managed from offices in Türkiye, Stantec’s team of 35 will manage contract administration, review and analysis of detailed design, and cost estimate documentation. The team’s responsibility includes supervising construction works, testing and commissioning, and supervising environmental and social management.

An additional goal of the project is to establish TST as a model utility for the country. With that in mind, the team will focus on building capacities at TST to replicate in other provinces.

Murat Sarioglu, regional managing director Türkiye, at Stantec: “Being awarded this project is an incredible opportunity for us use our global experience in wastewater infrastructure to support development in this growing region. We have managed several projects in Central Asia and we look forward to leveraging that experience to help communities across the Tashkent region make strides toward an environmental impact.”

Stantec’s team of water specialists in Türkiye is well-versed in the improvement of water infrastructure in Türkiye as well as in Northern Africa and Central Asia. The team has managed projects in Karakol and Toktogul in Kyrgyzstan, has provided long-term support for the city of Erzurum in Türkiye, and worked on a major infrastructure program in the Fayoum region in Egypt.
