Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design, recently announced its participation in the Structural Engineers 2050 Commitment Program (SE2050). The commitment prioritizes reduction of embodied carbon in our project work, using fewer and/or less impactful structural materials.
The mission of the SE2050 Commitment is to transform the practice of structural engineering in a way that is holistic, firm-wide, project-based, and data-driven. By 2050, all participating structural engineers will strive to eliminate embodied carbon in their projects.
Joining SE2050 aligns with our commitment to design solutions that make meaningful progress towards carbon neutral buildings and landscapes and prioritize materials that have a positive impact on the environment, climate, human health, and society. Achieving this meaningful and measurable outcome requires professional expertise, attention to details, and respect for the importance of performance data in the design process. SE2050 offers education and tools to support this goal.
Rooted in sustainability
“At Stantec, sustainability is the foundation of our identity, considered in every aspect of our operations and directly tied to our Strategic Plan,” said Beth Tomlinson, carbon and climate discipline leader, Buildings. “Our greatest contribution to sustainability is achieved, not only in our own corporate practice and culture, but through the services we provide to our clients and communities.”
Stantec is a signatory to many industry commitments addressing environmental, social, and governance principles. In addition to SE2050, Stantec is signatory to the AIA 2030 Commitment and AIA Materials Pledge. These commitments address operational carbon, embodied carbon, climate change mitigation, and material health impacts of our projects, and offer guidance to the design decisions we must make to transition to a carbon neutral future.
The firm designs with community in mind and recognizes the urgency and professional responsibility of mitigating carbon emissions and their impact on the climate and built environment. Stantec was recently named one of the most sustainable companies in the world by Corporate Knights, which released its Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations rankings. Companies in the Global 100 represent the top one percent of companies in the world on sustainability performance.
