Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, was recently selected to provide planning, electrical, and master planning services to support the Government of Queensland’s net zero emission strategy. The Queensland Government, through the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR), has made a commitment that from 2025 all new urban buses in South East Queensland (SEQ) will be zero emission buses, and for regional Queensland, implementation will begin between 2025-2030. The contract was awarded to an integrated team of practitioners from regional offices, including those of Stantec and legacy Cardno teams that joined the company through acquisition, which closed in December 2021.
Stantec will be closely collaborating with DTMR to assess what infrastructure upgrades are needed to implement the commitment. Replacing diesel with electric buses is only a part of the overall strategy that seeks to improve air quality, create quieter neighbourhoods and streets, and improve the health of the community and broader environment.
This is one of the first projects Stantec’s SEQ Building Services team is supporting, and services include:
DTMR has given several approvals to bus operators to deploy electric buses across the TransLink network. For example, later this year Hornibrook Bus Lines will deploy sixteen new electric buses, built on the Gold Coast, from their newly constructed green depot at North Lakes. Stantec have worked seamlessly to successfully complete the initial bus depot site inspections. Evaluating the demand on the electricity supply is a crucial step in the process, which will see the firm's engineers planning and coordinating upgrades to support this movement towards zero emissions.
“Adequate infrastructure planning, like planning for electric commuter transport, is essential to creating a sustainable future for Australia and to keep our diverse communities moving,” said Ashok Sukumaran, Stantec’s Australian country leader. “We’re proud to be a part of the energy transition movement, mobilising us towards a cleaner future where our communities can move around in a quieter, greener, and environmentally sustainable way.”
