Six stars for Stantec Australia Buildings team

Supporting SubStation No. 164 to get 6 Star Green Star rating

06/14/2022 NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA TSX, NYSE:STN

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, is excited to announce that SubStation No. 164 at 183–185 Clarence Street in Sydney has successfully achieved a 6 Star Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) for implementing environmentally sustainable building design and construction practices.

Sitting vacant for decades, the twelve-storey adaptive reuse project revitalised two adjacent heritage buildings, located in the heart of Sydney's CBD. The first-of-its-kind design offers an A-grade commercial space dedicated to delivering a sustainable outcome, converting these two historic buildings to meet the needs of a modern workspace, while respecting the authenticity of their past—and taking out major awards at the Urban Developer Awards 2021.

Stantec supported Built as both the developer and head contractor to deliver all building services and full documentationThe company’s sustainability team developed a tailored Environmentally Sustainable Design strategy that raised the project’s original target from 5 Star to 6 Star Green Star Design & As-Built certification. Stantec also acted as the lead consultant for delivering a 5 Star National Australian Built Environment Rating System Energy Commitment Agreement, and a 6 Star Green Star fit-out rating for Built’s head office, also located in the building.

"This project is an absolute career highlight for me—there are so many things I love about it. It is not as easy to target Green Star on heritage projects either, so getting such a clean report card from the GBCA is even more impressive,” said Clare Gallagher, Built’s National Sustainability Manager.

Stantec's committed to creating sustainable and resilient infrastructure for now and future generations—contributing to SubStation No. 164 will further cement this pledge.

“It’s amazing what like-minded people can achieve when working together. I’m thrilled to see this extraordinary design become reality. If more projects could have this same drive, focus and dedication towards sustainability action—which was clearly present in the SubStation No. 164 project—we could be living in a much more exciting, resilient, and healthier planet,” said Mathias Bressan, Stantec’s Sustainability Project Engineer.
