Leading global design firm Stantec has submitted its initial designs to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District 4 for the new diverging diamond (DDI) interchange at I-95 and Hypoluxo Road in South Florida. The reconstructed interchange will aim to improve traffic flow and driver safety. Stantec is leading the project along with a team of subconsultant partners, including Ty Lin International Group.
The design for the DDI will reduce the number of conflict points—locations at intersections where vehicle paths merge, diverge, or cross—at I-95 and Hypoluxo Road from 26 to 14 and spread these points throughout the interchange, reducing the risk of collisions. The DDI will create better sight distance at turns and significantly reduce confusion for drivers, while the ramp design will make wrong way entry more difficult. The design also shortens road crossings to improve pedestrian safety.
In addition to the roadway and ramps, Stantec has also designed improved stormwater drainage, enhanced lighting at all entrance and exit ramps, and created a new signal operating plan. A new intelligent transportation system will add additional safety and monitoring capabilities, including advanced countermeasures for wrong way driving.
“As Florida’s population continues to grow, so too does the need for enhancements to our transportation infrastructure,” said Juan Restrepo, PE, Florida transportation practice leader at Stantec. “We’re thrilled to continue working with FDOT on this project that will support the needs of the community and public safety for many years.”
Stantec’s Transportation practice creates the connections that get people and goods moving safely and efficiently—whether by car, bus, train, plane, or their own two feet. Stantec has a long history of helping FDOT deliver on its vision for improved mobility throughout Florida. For FDOT District 4, the firm successfully completed the $1.2 billion I-595 interchange project from I-75 to I-95, engineering a major expansion to significantly increase the I-595’s roadway capacity. The novel solution involved the design of three new braided-ramp bridges and modifications to the University Drive interchange, which ultimately saved five bridges from needing replacement. The Stantec team also designed the award-winning Tamiami Trail Bridging Project, which restored water flow from the Everglades to the Shark River Slough.
