With the help of Stantec, TransAlta’s Northern Goldfields Solar Project has been approved to progress to execution, having recently completed the development phase.

For the past year Engenium now Stantec (Stantec) has been working as the project management consultant (PMC) for TransAlta on the development and execution of two solar farms and a battery energy storage system, located in the Goldfields of Western Australia.
The Northern Goldfields Solar Project was initiated under a Power Purchase Agreement between BHP Nickel West (BHP) and TransAlta, which aims to provide fuel savings and reduce BHP’s Scope 2 electricity greenhouse gas emissions from its Leinster and Mount Keith operations by 540,000 tonnes of CO2e over the first 10 years of operation.
This renewable energy project is the first solar photovoltaic build in Australia for TransAlta and provides a platform for further renewable energy development. The project supports BHP’s emissions reduction targets and will deliver lower carbon, sustainable nickel to its customers.
With Stantec's help, TransAlta’s Northern Goldfields Solar Project has now been approved to progress to execution, having recently completed the development phase.

The project comprises a 27.4-megawatt Mount Keith solar farm, 10.7-megawatt Leinster solar farm, 10.1-megawatt / 5.4-megawatt hour Leinster battery energy storage system and interconnecting transmission infrastructure, all of which will be integrated into TransAlta’s 169-megawatt Southern Cross Energy North remote network.
This is the first large-scale onsite solar farm and battery that BHP has commissioned at any of its global operations. Stantec is proud to be involved as the PMC on this ground-breaking project.
