Stantec adds team of environmental scientists to Gulf Environmental Services Practice

Leading global design firm, Stantec, has expanded its environmental services practice with the strategic hire of seven environmental professionals in South Florida. The addition of this team increases the firm’s service offerings and strengthens its ability to serve its clients in the Gulf Region.

With more than a century of collective of experience, this group brings an extensive depth of knowledge in environmental assessment, studies, and compliance monitoring. The new members of the Stantec Gulf Water Practice include:

• Jim M. Bolleter, P.E. joins Stantec as a senior principal and water resources engineer, bringing more than 35 years of experience in leading billion-dollar engineering, planning, and scientific projects throughout the U.S. and worldwide. He has managed highly complex technical projects and programs, led large multidisciplinary initiatives, and successfully engaged stakeholders and regulators. This includes directing the preparation and implementation of water quality, hydrogeologic, and ecological monitoring at the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant in Homestead, Florida. Bolleter has also directed the Loxahatchee River Watershed Restoration Project for the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) as part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan.

• Sharon Ewe, PhD joins Stantec as a principal and senior scientist. For 19 years, Dr. Ewe’s professional, post-graduate work has focused on freshwater and coastal wetland ecosystems. This includes research on wetland ecology, plant ecophysiology, invasive species assessment and management, and landscape and ecosystem ecology. She recently served as the project manager for the SFWMD Science Plan, which is designed to ensure the Everglades meets the recently established Water Quality Based Effluent Limit. Dr. Ewe’s research has been published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, including Ecosystems, Aquatic Botany, Florida Scientist, and Biocontrol. She earned her PhD from the University of Miami and maintains her research faculty status at Florida International University and Florida Atlantic University.

• Steven Elliott is a senior environmental chemist bringing more than 28 years of experience in fieldwork and data analytics to support investigations monitoring freshwater and marine ecosystems. He is an expert in analytical method development, quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC), and data management support. Elliott’s analytical and environmental chemistry projects have involved project strategy development and multimedia environmental sampling, as well as surface, porewater, and groundwater sampling.

• Helen “Elli” Hammond joins Stantec as a senior environmental scientist with more than 12 years of experience. She is well versed in conducting and managing ecological surveys, water quality sampling, plant identification and management projects, habitat evaluations, endangered species surveys, wetland delineations, and data QA. Hammond’s field work includes the sampling of biota, sediment, surface water, soil, groundwater, and porewater. She has served as the project manager and member of the field team that monitors, tracks, and treats old world climbing fern in the Everglades Water Conservation Areas. As part of this work, Hammond has identified exotic/invasive plant species on more than 100 tree islands in these areas.

• Tiara Thanawastien is also a senior environmental scientist. She has 12 years of experience in conducting wetland and water quality monitoring, aquatic and terrestrial vegetation, and wildlife investigations. Thanawastien has extensive knowledge of wetland delineation and mitigation projects, habitat evaluations, endangered species surveys, and environmental regulatory compliance evaluations. Her work includes conducting field surveys to delineate wetlands and waterbodies for state and federal jurisdictions, and to identify suitable habitat for threatened and endangered species.

• Kristen Vaughan joins Stantec as a senior scientist with more than 12 years of experience supporting SFWMD conducting research in the Everglades stormwater treatment areas (STAs). She has worked closely with District scientists to support efforts to better understand the nutrient dynamics of vegetation and water management practices in the STAs and the greater Everglades ecosystem. Vaughan is experienced in in ecological, wetland, and wildlife investigation, stream and wetland restoration, and ecosystem/biodiversity management. Her work includes conducting stormwater treatment analyses and interpretation field support for SFWMD and leading the ecological field survey efforts for the 100-square-mile area surrounding the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant.

• Jean Woodmansee joins Stantec as an environmental scientist, with expertise in native plant and invasive species management, as well as developing community environmental education programs. Her experience also includes serving as a field lead for the SFWMD Boma Property Biological Field Surveys, where she conducted wetland and waterway delineations, land cover type classifications, and threatened and endangered species habitat assessments. In addition, she has conducted extensive water quality monitoring and data analyses.
