The Arizona Airports Association (AzAA) held its 2021 Dutch Bertholf Spring Conference this May and awarded their Corporate Member of the Year award to Mark Koester, a senior principal and airport engineer with Stantec, at their virtual awards event. This Corporate Member of the Year award honors a Corporate or Associate member of AzAA for dedication and support of Arizona aviation.

Based out of Stantec’s Phoenix, Arizona, office, Mark has been a member of AzAA for 30 years and provided professional engineering services to the aviation industry for more than 40. He has filled many roles, from airport engineer to project principal and client manager.

“I have worked closely with Mark for the past 15 years and I can’t say enough about his passion for airports and his contributions to the aviation industry,” says David Dargie, Stantec’s sector leader for airport infrastructure. “I want to personally congratulate Mark for this note-worthy award and commend him for his many contributions to the aviation industry over the course of his career.”

Mark’s passion for airports and aviation-related facilities has taken him to projects all around the world, and he has been responsible for nearly $1.5 billion worth of improvements at over 30 airports in the United States, Canada, South Pacific, and the Caribbean. For many of those projects, he has provided engineering at all phases of development from planning to construction and for airport infrastructure both airside and landside, including runways, taxiways, aprons, airport terminals, hangars, and ARFF facilities, as well as roadways, storm water conveyance, utilities, and fueling systems.

When choosing a member for the Corporate member of the year award, AzAA’s board looks for several criteria in their nominees, including demonstrated dedication and support of AzAA, a broad depth of knowledge and understanding of aviation issues, proven contributions to aviation facilities and airport improvement projects, a high level of respect in the local, state, and federal aviation community, and demonstrated mentorship of individuals with an interest in Aviation including staff and/or others in their community.

Stantec has been a long-time member of AzAA and was a Gold Sponsor for the 2021 Spring Conference. AzAA currently has 43 active corporate members (companies with staff members engaged) and 28 airport members. They were formed in 1979 to bring together the representatives of public and private airports and others interested in the general benefit of aviation to provide information, expertise and support to all those in the State's aviation industry.
