Dr. Joseph Jacangelo, vice president, director of research for Stantec, global design and engineering firm, has been selected by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) as its next president-elect.
AWWA is an international, nonprofit, scientific and educational society dedicated to providing total water solutions assuring the effective management of water. Founded in 1881, its 50,000 worldwide members represent the full spectrum of the water community: public water and wastewater systems, environmental advocates, scientists, academicians, and others who hold a genuine interest in water, our most important resource.
Dr. Jacangelo will begin his term as president-elect in June at the conclusion of AWWA’s Annual Conference & Exposition (ACE21), and his term as president begins in June 2022. He will follow current president-elect Dr. Chi Ho Sham. The 61-member board of directors also selected four vice presidents and a director-at-large during the association’s annual winter meeting on January 26, 2021.
“I am honored to have been named incoming president-elect of the American Water Works Association,” said Dr. Jacangelo. “Our organization is a strong and vibrant one. I am confident that by working with our dedicated members, we can address any current and emerging water issues.”
Dr. Jacangelo has been a member of AWWA for over 35 years. He served two terms as a Board Member, is a past Chair of the Technical and Education Council, and past Chair of the International Council. He has served as either chair or member of over 25 of the organization’s various committees. He is also a past recipient of AWWA’s Volunteer of the Year award.
Dr. Jacangelo has more than 40 years of experience in the field of environmental health engineering, and has specialized in the areas of emerging contaminants, water quality and treatment, water and wastewater disinfection, membrane technology, water reuse, and public health. He has been a first author or senior author of numerous peer-reviewed publications. He is also a past Chair of the Board of Directors of the WateReuse Research Foundation. In addition to his role at Stantec he is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health.
