Stantec—a global engineering, consulting, architecture, and design firm—recently was selected by the El Dorado Water Agency and the County of El Dorado to prepare a drainage feasibility study for the county fairgrounds. The Fairgrounds Water Drainage Improvement Project Feasibility Study will help alleviate localized flooding and protect this economically critical attraction in Placerville, California.
The El Dorado County Fairgrounds hosts a variety of events open to the public, but experiences occasional flooding due to its topography and aging infrastructure. The feasibility study will identify opportunities for capturing, storing, and using stormwater runoff to improve flood management and better manage stormwater as a resource.
The El Dorado County Fair, which is part of the network of California fairs, is a significant economic driver for the County, representing more than $13.8 million in direct and indirect spending and 116 local jobs. In preparing the study, Stantec will conduct analysis and engineering design to address the chronic issue of on-site flooding for immediate implementation. Stantec will collaborate with the County of El Dorado, the El Dorado Water Agency, and the El Dorado County Fair on the project.
This study builds on Stantec’s longstanding relationship with the El Dorado Water Agency, which commits to partnering with the community to implement integrated water management solutions. Stantec aided the El Dorado Water Agency and its local partners (the County of El Dorado and the City of Placerville) in developing the stormwater resource plan (SWRP) in 2018 to identify and prioritize multi-beneficial use projects that can monitor stormwater, capture stormwater, treat and reuse, integrate green infrastructure, augment groundwater, and support low impact development. The Fairgrounds Water Drainage Improvement Project is one of the identified priority projects.
“We look forward to collaborating on this important feasibility study in support of the treasured local fairgrounds,” said Yung-Hsin Sun, a vice president in Stantec’s Water group. “This is a meaningful community project that embodies the core principles that we stand for: strengthening our local communities in tangible and lasting ways.”
