ACEC of Washington awards three Stantec projects

Stantec has been honored with three awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Washington in its annual Engineering Excellence Awards Program. The awards recognize projects that represent a wide range of engineering achievements and demonstrate the highest degree of skill and ingenuity.

Best in State Gold Award: Unique or Innovative Applications
US 12 Wildcat Creek Bridge Replacement

The Stantec/Graham Contracting design-build team’s solution replaced the 82-year-old, 150-foot bridge in just 17 days, saving the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) $4 million.

The bridge design minimized traffic, community, and environmental impacts by using a 54-foot precast arch culvert structure rather than the standard WSDOT girder bridge, which likely would have included the construction of a temporary bridge and a four- to five-month construction schedule. This project solution nearly eliminated cast-in-place concrete by utilizing precast concrete elements including foundations, retaining walls, and traffic barriers.

The new arch structure adds stability, maintains natural hydrology and fish habitat, and complements local and regional aesthetics.

Providence Regional Medical Center Everett Colby A-Wing Switchboard Replacement

In the healthcare environment, replacing the switchboard in an electrical room takes careful planning and execution to keep the power flowing to critical, life-saving equipment throughout the hospital.

At the Providence Regional Medical Center Everett Colby campus, Stantec worked closely with electrical contractor, VECA, and the hospital’s facilities department (led by Pete Smeltz) and construction project manager, David Wachob, to solve the puzzle of upgrading the A-Wing Switchboard. Installed in the 1960s, the switchboard powered 113 patient rooms and 14 departments, including the hospital’s main lab and pharmacy. The new switchboard has been modernized to meet current codes and will continue to serve a vital portion of this hospital campus for many years to come.

Lift Station No. 46 Regional Conveyance System

At $38 million, the Lift Station No. 46 Regional Sewer Conveyance Project was the largest project ever completed by the Soos Creek Water and Sewer District (SCWSD) in King County, Washington.

Stantec led the basin study and flow analysis, removal of an upstream lift station; evaluation of the new lift station location and conveyance route; collaboration of the trenchless construction method; route and risk/cost assessment; property purchase negotiation and easement acquisition; permitting acquisition, stakeholder outreach; design; construction administration; and community outreach.
