Stantec leads construction management support of King County’s Eastside Interceptor Rehabilitation Project

Critical wastewater pipe project requires four-month bypass near Boeing’s Renton Factory

04/19/2019 BELLEVUE, WA NYSE, TSX:STN

Earlier this month, the Wastewater Treatment Division of King County’s Department of Natural Resources and Parks (WTD) started an important rehabilitation project in Renton along Logan Avenue near the Boeing Renton Factory and The Landing mixed-use development. The Eastside Interceptor Section 2 Rehabilitation Phase 2 project will clean, improve, and extend the life of nearly a mile of 96-inch aging sewer pipe that carries up to 45 million gallons per day of wastewater from eastside homes and businesses to King County’s South Treatment Plant in Renton.

Stantec’s Bellevue office is leading construction management, working with WTD on the $18 million project.

A critical element of the rehabilitation project is maintaining a continuous flow of wastewater through three bypass pipes, which will redirect wastewater around the main pipe undergoing repair. During the bypass window, from June through September, Stantec inspectors will be on site round-the-clock to immediately address any bypass line, pumping, or extreme weather issues that have the potential to disrupt wastewater flows.

Minimizing community impacts in this busy area is critical to WTD. The project includes multiple odor control locations, pedestrian/bicycle path detours, and critical intersection crossings for residents and business—including more than 12,000 workers at the Boeing facility and shoppers, diners, and residents of The Landing. Stantec will work with WTD to monitor contractor compliance with safety requirements, traffic control, and permit conditions and support stakeholder outreach efforts.

"This is a critical project, and we look forward to supporting WTD as it works on important infrastructure repairs for King County residents . We are passionate about improving the communities where we work and live, and collaborating with WTD to protect water quality, public health, and the environment is an honor."

In addition to its Bellevue staff, Stantec is providing additional expertise from its Portland, Oregon, office. Planning Management Services Inc. and Griffin, Hill & Associates will support the Stantec team. The contractor is Kiewit.
