Global design firm Stantec is celebrating the inauguration of the Samuel de Champlain Bridge, the iconic new 3.4 km bridge that connects Montreal to the South Shore. Stantec served as Independent Engineer during the design and construction of this major North American infrastructure project.
The inauguration celebration featured François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, as well as several other dignitaries and guests. The new structure replaces the old Champlain Bridge designed in 1962, which had reached the end of its service life. With its unique, distinctive architectural signature, the new bridge will carry millions of commuters, tourists, and commercial vehicles per year.
Along with Ramboll, Stantec oversaw the design conformity and overall quality of the project, which was carried out by a public-private partnership between the Signature on the Saint Lawrence Group and Infrastructure Canada. To successfully perform its role in this transformative project for the Greater Montreal area, Stantec assembled a multidisciplinary engineering and project management team that included experts on roads, bridges and civil engineering structures, buildings, traffic, and environmental services. The Stantec team conducted design, construction and manufacturing quality audits, all with the goal of building a bridge that will last for 125 years.
“An historic project is being unveiled today and I am very impressed by the colossal work that our engineering teams have accomplished,” says Isabelle Jodoin, Stantec’s senior vice president for Quebec. “More than 125 Stantec employees worked on the new Champlain Bridge over the past four years and we are proud to have helped build a safe, durable, high-quality structure for the millions of commuters and commercial vehicles that will use it every year. Our participation in this high-profile project, which will become a new symbol for Montreal, attests to the depth and breadth of our multidisciplinary expertise in engineering and major project management.”
The Samuel de Champlain Bridge is the main gateway to the Island of Montreal and an important link for trade between Canada and the United States. This new bridge consists of two traffic corridors with three lanes in each direction, a central public transit corridor that will carry the future Réseau express métropolitain light rail train starting in 2022, and a multi-use path for cyclists and pedestrians. The bridge will be open in both directions as of July 1, 2019.
