Helping to deliver area-wide transformational economic regeneration in South Tees

South Tees Development Corporation (STDC) launched with the key objective of delivering area-wide, economic regeneration on South Tees, including assets of the former integrated iron and steel plant. Assets including the blast furnace, coke ovens, power station, steel making plant, effluent pits, and a landfill were placed in a ‘Keep Safe’ state, with the last operator in liquidation.

The South Tees Site Company Ltd (STSC) was formed by the UK Government to take forward the Keep Safe activities along with safety critical decommissioning and demolition. Stantec was engaged to provide technical assistance and HSSE due diligence to KPMG, commissioned by STDC to advise on the incorporation of STSC into STDC. The technical audit included assessing the status of regulatory HSSE compliance of the assets, reviewing the Keep Safe activities, and assessing overall operational efficiency. We put together an experienced team of auditors comprising of specialists in Health and Safety, Environmental Permitting, COMAH, Landfill, Risk Assessment, and Environmental Liability.

The outputs from our technical reviews, along with those of KPMG, were presented to the main board and the transition of STSC into STDC was completed. The former iron and steel works is now actively being developed into a new business platform for employment creation within South Teesside.
