Goochland Elementary School - Planning and Design

Located in Virginia, Goochland County Public Schools wanted their new elementary school to provide an exciting and inviting, safe and secure, operationally efficient, and instructionally appropriate space for pre-K through fifth grade students. They reached out to our educational planners and designers to help.

We developed a two-story, prototype design that was easy and affordable to build but kept the students and their needs at the center. We focused on creating spaces that flex for various activities and group sizes. These spaces can support uses ranging from individual learning to small group breakout to whole-group instruction.

A central volume flanked on either side by on-looking classrooms serves as the main organizing element of the school. The volume itself is further accentuated by free-standing program elements that provide space for a variety of smaller programs in addition to areas for the library, performance, and collaboration.

The new Goochland Elementary School supports the District’s strategic objectives for innovation and growth and provides a welcoming and vibrant learning space for more than 700 students. The school also includes a cafeteria, kitchen, gymnasium, and modern security enhancements.
