Travers Solar Project
Amazon has signed a deal for the supply of renewable energy for its Canadian operations, agreeing to buy the output of Greengate Power Corp’s Travers solar farm in Alberta. Lomond, a tiny village in southern Alberta, will be home to Travers—one of North America’s largest solar projects.
Our team at Stantec was engaged by PCL to provide civil and electrical engineering and project management services. We designed the project to accommodate a large-scale solar PV system with single-axis tracking and ground mounted bifacial solar panels generating energy throughout the day. An overhead transmission system with isolation switches, electrical protection equipment, station service supply, and revenue metering will connect the solar system to the electrical grid, owned by Altalink in the region. Helping lead the way in designs for communities in energy transition, our team has worked swiftly to complete the civil and storm water management design, providing a balanced site with precision.
Upon completion, the Travers solar farm will offset more than 600,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year. It is also helping Vulcan County by generating tax dollars to replace tax revenue previously received from several oil and gas companies that have defaulted in the region.
