Stantec to provide design services for Lakeridge Health’s Bowmanville Hospital Redevelopment project

Helping address gaps and increase access to quality health services in the region

05/14/2024 BOWMANVILLE, ON TSX, NYSE: STN

Global integrated design firm Stantec has been selected to provide planning, design, and conformance (PDC) services for Lakeridge Health’s Bowmanville Hospital Redevelopment project. Stantec’s health team will produce output specifications for the design, new construction, and renovations of the existing facility. Throughout the project duration, Stantec will evaluate conformance to design and construction requirements for the new hospital.

As one of the fastest growing areas in Ontario, Durham Region is expected to double in population by 2041 and health services need to support the growing community. With more than 51,000 clinical visits last year, Bowmanville Hospital is a full-service community hospital that provides emergency and critical care, inpatient and outpatient surgery, complex continuing care, diabetes education, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, palliative care, diagnostic imaging, and laboratory services. The hospital is also home to the Regional Eye Centre.

The facility will also house new services such as haemodialysis and a wide range of ambulatory care clinics. Expansion space within the redeveloped hospital will allow for future clinical growth requirements over the next 15-20 years.

“We are honoured to be part of the team bringing this much-anticipated redevelopment to fruition. In addition to filling gaps in service, it will increase access to health services for the residents of Durham Region,” said Andrew Brimble, principal for Stantec. “Bowmanville Hospital will be transformed into a modernized facility that will support the health and well-being of the community for years to come.”

Funding growth
Infrastructure Ontario is committed to supporting Lakeridge Health’s effort to meet the needs of the region. In addition, the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation announced its ambitious new campaign goal to raise the community share of $110 million. The We Care, We Can campaign, the largest fundraising initiative in the foundation's history, was launched in 2019 to raise funds for the hospital’s redevelopment, expansion, and equipment needs. The Foundation wholeheartedly calls upon the community to support this campaign.

“As the Foundation’s mission gains momentum, it continues to push the boundaries and redefine what’s possible – not just for the present, but for future generations,” said Frank Cerisano, chief executive officer of the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation. "Now is the time for Clarington and the Region to come together as one to support a much-needed project for our community and Durham Region. It’s our responsibility to support our hospital, and to take the necessary steps to ensure we meet our community share."

Lakeridge Health continues to work with its community to meet its local share needs for the hospital’s expansion.

“Lakeridge Health is thrilled to work with Stantec as the vendor for the Bowmanville Hospital redevelopment project,” said Cynthia Davis, president and CEO of Lakeridge Health. “Today’s announcement is a major milestone in bringing our vision of a modernized, state-of-the-art hospital to life. No doubt, this project will transform the way we deliver care to patients and families in Clarington and beyond for generations to come. We’re grateful for the support and collaboration of our partners at Infrastructure Ontario, the Municipality of Clarington, the Region of Durham, and our generous donors and community members who are making this project possible.”
